GUEST INFORMATION
What you can expect at a Bar Mitzvah:
What Is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah?:
At 13, a young Jewish man or woman becomes obligated to observe the commandments of Judaism. “Bar/Bat mitzvah” actually means “son/daughter of the commandments.” The celebration of a bar/bat mitzvah signifies that the young man or woman is beginning and will continue to function as an active and responsible Jew in the synagogue and in the wider Jewish community.
When should guests arrive?
The time listed on the invitation is the official starting time for the weekly Shabbat service. Family and invited guests try to arrive at the beginning, even though the Bar Mitzvah activities occur somewhat later in the service.
What happens at the Service?
Avi and Jonah will participate in the weekly Shabbat (Saturday) service in a variety of ways, such as leading prayers and reading (often chanting) from the Torah (Bible). Family members are usually honored by being called up to say a blessing over (or to read from) the Torah. Although many prayers are in Hebrew, a complete translation of everything that is said is contained in the prayer book.
What do guests wear to the service?
Guests at a Bar Mitzvah service generally wear dressy clothes–for men, either a suit or slacks, tie and jacket, and for women, a dress or formal pantsuit.
Why do men wear a head covering?
A kippah, or head covering (also called a yarmulke in Yiddish), is worn by all males present during the service. Wearing a kippah is not a symbol of religious identification, but is rather an act of respect to God and the sacredness of the worship space. Wearing a head covering is a non-denominational act of showing respect. Kippahs will be provided for all male guests at the door of the sanctuary.
What is the rule about cell phones and cameras?
No cell phones or cameras are allowed during Shabbat services to maintain the sanctity of the sanctuary.
What is the Kiddush following services?
Shabbat morning services are usually followed by a Kiddush, or light meal, in the synagogue’s social hall. The Kiddush gets its name from the blessing over wine that is recited just before the meal. The Bar Mitzvah guests and all members of the community are invited to the Kiddush.
What do guests wear to the evening party?
Since the party is an evening celebration, comfortable but elegant attire is suggested. Girls and women are encouraged to wear fun, stylish party dresses; boys and men in dress pants and button-down shirts (sport jackets optional). Outfits should feel special, but not formal like a gala.
When is the Teen Drop Off/ Pick Up for the party?
Teen Drop off and pick-up: Teen drop off and pick-up will be at the Pavilion at Omni Barton Creek. Drop off at 6:00pm and pick-up in the same location at approximately 10:30pm, or whenever you decide.
